Nocturnal Rituals: Conflux Club Night at Perron

For the second consecutive year, Conflux is partnering with Perron to immerse audiences in the nocturnal rituals of contemporary club culture. On Saturday, September 20th, Conflux club night will reimagine the club as a modern urban ceremony, a space where the boundaries between self and surroundings dissolve, and music becomes a medium for collective transcendence within the decaying landscape of the digital age. This year’s Club Night lineup includes a diverse selection of artists, each bringing their own unique sound and energy to the night. Below, we introduce them.

Marijn S

Setting the tone for the night is Dutch up-and-coming producer and DJ Marijn S. She delivers an organic fusion of dance music’s many eras, with radiant breaks, gritty and icy soundscapes, and haunting textures that leave a lasting impression. With her debut performance for STOOR / PINK NOISE during ADE, an hour full of her own creations, ranging from deep ambient textures and dreamy IDM to more disrupted bass, abstract noise, and hard-hitting electro and techno, she sparked the curiosity of many.

Starting her musical career through the record label and podcast series Kulture Lab, she has steadily made her way forward, releasing her debut EP on the Berlin-based label Spray, followed by several solo EPs on Amsterdam’s Polychrome Audio, Milan BSR, and Hong Kong’s Transarctica. Her artistic expression balances simplicity and complexity. Both as a producer and a DJ, she enjoys exploring the juxtaposition of contrasts. In her DJ sets, she masterfully blends a wide palette of sounds, comfortably moving from ‘soft rave’ to the high-energy pulse of break-driven rhythms. At Conflux Marijn S will play a DJ set.

k means

Directly from Bristol, where they tunneled through many of the most beloved venues across the UK, k means is ready to join Conflux’s booth. They are known to find themselves ebbing and flowing between the rush of the club and experimental spirals. k means’ interest in dance music started at a young age by covering video game soundtracks on the piano. What used to be a genuine interest turned into a visceral love for footwork mixed with intricate rhythms and visceral physicality. Always unexpected, k means likes to take you to the deep end, with no preference for specific tempo or genre.

Nowadays, you can find k means as a resident at Bristol’s Psychotherapy Sessions, and regularly contributing extensive sessions to Noods, Rinse FM, and Netil. Outside the UK, they brought their unique perspective to Berlin’s OHM, London’s Fabric, and Malmö’s Intonal Festival. And now they are expected to make their Rotterdam debut at Conflux’s Club Night.

Nazar

Nazar is one of those artists whose background speaks for itself, moulding his artistic practice. Raised in Belgium, in 2002, with the end of the Angolan civil war, Nazar returned home. The latter marked his start in music production, taking his own unique take on Angola’s Kuduro music and forging what he self-defined as ‘Rough Kuduro’. What is known to be uptempo and danceable, Nazar inverted through weaving war sounds like guns cocking, airstrike swooshes, and cold synths with cascading percussion, along with lyrics focused on massacres and violence, calling for an end to the dictatorship. Nazar tells his story both impressionistically, evoking atmospheres and dramatic themes, and at times with stark directness.

By now, he has released several EPs. Specifically, after signing with Hyperdub, Enclave was released. The latter reflects upon Nazar’s tumultuous journey as a way to make sense of the violent past of Angola with a bitter hope for a better future. Nazar’s second album, Demilitarize, follows his remarkable 2020 debut Guerrilla. Reprocessed Kuduro music with rough textures, field recordings, and media clips tells Nazar’s personal story of the civil war that exiled his family in Europe, while his father, a rebel General, fought a losing battle in the jungle back home.

Chloe Lula

Chloe Lula may already resonate in the minds of many techno enthusiasts as a resident DJ and recording artist with Tresor. She has performed at Berghain, Boiler Room, Movement Detroit, and countless clubs, festivals, and parties across the globe. Chloe is known for her atmospheric sets that delve deep into the niche recesses of techno. In addition to her releases on Tresor Records, she has also released on Blueprint and P.E.A.R.L.’s label Falling Ethics, alongside Oscar Mulero, and has a new record coming out this November on Rotterdam techno label MORD.

Raised in San Francisco and now based in Berlin, her musical journey began as a classical cellist. She eventually left the conservatory after immersing herself in the broader spectrum of what sound could be. In Berlin, she was exposed to the sleek, stark minimalism of artists such as Sandwell District, as well as to avant-garde electroacoustic music, the latter of which continues to influence her current sound practice. Today, she incorporates her instrument, the cello, into ambient and electroacoustic live performances, something you can experience during this year’s Conflux on Saturday at Brutus, just a few hours before she takes you on an introspective musical journey at Perron, joining Marijn S, k means, Nazar, and finally, Beverly Hills 808303.

Beverly Hills 808303

Last but not least, the highly anticipated Beverly Hills 808303, I-F’s acid alter ego, is set to close out the Club Night. I-F, a.k.a. Beverly Hills 808303 (among other aliases), is a Dutch producer and DJ whose legacy is firmly cemented. His tracks, and his impeccable taste in records, have made generations of ravers move. Emerging from the squat and pirate radio scene of The Hague in the early ’90s, his musical journey has spanned everything from gaudy Italo disco to hardcore acid and back again.

Through his Beverly Hills 808303 project specifically, he dives deep into a world of distorted acid sounds, bringing machine music to life with every squelch and groove. The sound is built around two iconic pieces of Roland hardware: the TR-808 drum machine and the TB-303 synthesizer, almost always heavily distorted. This style was born out of the Acid Planet raves that defined The Hague’s underground scene. I-F is a free spirit who doesn’t conform, a one-of-a-kind DJ whose music defies definition and simply must be experienced.
