Tracing Symbiotic Realities: A Reflection on Conflux 2024

While our perspectives continue to shift toward emerging questions around technology and society, we take a moment to revisit last year’s theme and its lingering relevance. In a world increasingly shaped by intelligent systems, the boundaries between human and machine continue to dissolve, amplifying the need to understand and critically reflect on our position within a technologically driven society.

Over the past three years, Conflux Festival has investigated how technological systems are  entangled with our daily lives, bodies, and modes of perception. In 2024, the festival returned to Rotterdam under the theme Symbiotic Realities, inviting artists, researchers, and  audiences to explore the complex entwinement of organic and synthetic forms of intelligence. From September 19 to 22, Conflux offered a dense programme of audiovisual performances, site-specific sound and light installations, critical talks, and a club night across various locations in the city.

Through speculative experiments, sensory encounters, and collective reflections, the 2024 edition probed how human experience is being redefined in relation to automation, computation, and non-human agency.
Over four days, primarily based in the M4H area, but extending beyond, the festival’s performance programme invited artists to research how sound and light shape our experience of reality and interact with our bodies and minds. Meanwhile, the exhibition programme offered space for artists to explore and challenge these processes by presenting works that offered alternative views on how our sensory systems mediate, and sometimes distort, our relationship with the world around us.

With installations such as LFS2 by Mariska de Groot & Dieter Vandoren and other artists exhibiting included Sabrina Ratté, Mint Park, Macular, and Renzo van Steenbergen & Kristjan Pütsep with Portaal. Conflux immersed the audience in an interplay of physicality, light, and sonic expression. On Friday and Saturday, the festival moved to Brutus and Katoenhuis, two iconic venues in Rotterdam, where the raw and industrial spaces served as backdrops for performances that merged image and sound.

“Conflux Festival proves more than ever that it is a necessary asset, not only for  the city of Rotterdam but for the music world in general: a medley of drone-y  soundscapes and innovative digital art once again descended on Rotterdam,  from the far West to the heart of the city.” — Gonzo Circus review Conflux 2024 by Hasret Emine.

As in the first editions, the festival was inaugurated on Thursday the 18th at Plein 1940, with a  rich AV programme in the public space with Rotterdam artists setting the tone for the days to come. Taking part in the opening programme were sound artists Anni Nöps & Casimir Geelhoed, who, with their abstract and subtle composition on the Line AV 2.0 by Macular, captivated the attention of the many curious visitors. The event, freely accessible to the public, continued with another composition by Alberta Balsam on the Line AV 2.0 installation and a visual performance including refracted laserbeams by Zalán Szakács with a music by Teresa Winter, who concluded the evening by turning the square and its surroundings into another one of Conflux’s unique stages.

At the core of this edition was an exploration of the intricate connections between art, music, and human sensory perception, reflecting the annual theme Symbiotic Realities. This theme addressed the growing entanglement between human and machine, and how technology increasingly co-shapes our bodies, behaviours, and ways of knowing the world. As in previous years, the festival programme unfolded through a linear timetable, allowing the audience to experience the full trajectory of the festival without having to choose between overlapping events. This approach offered a carefully curated, multi-day experience that encouraged deeper focus and immersive engagement with the themes explored throughout Conflux 2024.

Katoenhuis became a main stage for the exhibition programme, which, like the opening event at Plein 1940, was freely accessible to the public. By offering these components without an entry fee, Conflux aims to lower the threshold for engagement and invite a broader audience to experience the festival. An absolute highlight of the exhibition programme was The Pendulum Always Swings back to Stillness, a Conflux-commissioned installation by Jeroen Alexander Meijer that playfully explored the psychological effects of light overstimulation on the sensory system.

On Friday evening at Brutus, Sara Persico opened the night with a gripping solo set of evolving electronic textures and expressive vocal improvisations, immediately drawing in the crowd. She was followed by feedbacksociety, whose BrKpCm performance turned the stage into a hypnotic audiovisual vortex: live camera footage from a rotating drill created spiraling light patterns that were translated into sound in real time, a visceral fusion of kinetic machinery and immersive audio visual art. In the second half, Roly Porter, Zohar, and Jeisson Drenth transformed Brutus’s brutalist concrete halls into a cathedral of sound and vision. Porter’s deep, atmospheric soundscapes and abrasive breakbeats resonated like tectonic shifts, while the hybrid AV collaboration between Zohar’s rough, rhythmic drive and Drenth’s sculptural visuals offered a powerful, multi-sensory climax to the night.

Saturday continued at full pace, adding to the programme a conference, where academic speakers Thomas Moynihan, Peter van der Putten & Maarten Lamers and Bogna Konior, together with exhibiting artists such as Heleen Blanken, Lavender Suarez, and Zalán Szakács, gave lectures about their work and subjects related to the festival theme. The conference was moderated by Cecile van Bruggen and Eric Parren.

The end of the conference coincided with the arrival at Arminius of MμRMUR: The Deer by Fronte Vacuo, a traveling performance combining intervention, body art, sound experiments, and live streaming (which could also be viewed at Katoenhuis as part of the exhibition programme).

Fronte Vacuo, formed by Marco Donnarumma, Margherita Pevere, and Andrea Familari,  completed a 24 km walk from The Hague to Rotterdam, concluding at Brutus, where they opened another evening of programming.

Alongside the visceral performance by Fronte Vacuo, Saturday night featured a dynamic set by Edwin van der Heide, who presented his live project LSF, exploring sound and  laser-light as sculptural elements in constant flux. He was followed by Resina, the Polish cellist and sound artist, whose emotionally charged compositions blended layered string work with electronic textures, creating an atmosphere both intimate and expansive. The night culminated in a striking premiere: a collaborative performance between Heleen Blanken and Aho Ssan, merging generative visuals made with a large scale kinetic sculpture comprised of mirrors and immersive sound design into a meditative experience.

Not long after, the Conflux crowd flowed into Perron, where the club night  carried the energy forward. Sets by NVST, local favorite Shahmaran, Legowelt, Talismann, and Nkisi pushed the theme of Symbiotic Realities into the realm of collective movement, blurring the lines between body, machine, and beat on the dance floor.

After Saturday night reached its peak on the dancefloor, Conflux 2024 closed with a reflective turn on Sunday. A sound healing session at WORM offered space to wind down, featuring an intense and meditative performance by C. Lavender, known for her deep listening practices and immersive sonic environments. The festival concluded with Marco Broeders and Julian Edwardes performing The Open Loop, a Conflux-commissioned installation first presented during the inaugural edition, now reimagined as a live, immersive experience that invited the audience into a shared state of introspection triggered by this AV ‘Entrainment’ installation that builds upon the idea of the Dream Machine by Brion Gysin.

  • Exhibition

Perception is a vital conduit between the external world and our inner experience, shaping the very foundation of how we understand and construct reality. At the Conflux Festival, the exhibition invites artists to explore and challenge these processes by presenting works that offer alternative views on how our sensory systems mediate and sometimes distort our relationship with the world around us. Through abstract fields of light, immersive soundscapes, dynamic video patterns, and innovative interventions, the artists reimagine the boundaries of perception, reflecting on the festival's theme, "Symbiotic Realities."

"Symbiotic Realities" calls for a deeper reflection on the interconnectedness between human consciousness, technology, and the environment, suggesting that reality is not a fixed concept but a fluid and evolving experience shaped by myriad forces. In this spirit, the exhibition serves as a laboratory for sensory experimentation, where the audience is invited to experience how perception itself can be stretched, reconfigured, or augmented, forging new connections between the organic and the digital, the natural and the constructed.

Hosted at Katoenhuis, a multifunctional hub for immersive experiences and technology, the exhibition will be open from Friday afternoon, September 20th, through Sunday evening, September 22nd. Visitors will find themselves immersed in a series of experimental light- and soundinstallations and artworks that challenge conventional ideas about how we perceive reality, encouraging them to engage actively with the sensory interplay that defines our existence in an increasingly interconnected world.

  • Club Night

For the first time, Conflux Festival 2024 partners with Perron to delve into the nocturnal reality of contemporary club culture with a techno-driven Saturday night programme. This event reimagines the club as a modern urban ritual, a space where boundaries blur and music becomes a medium for collective transcendence.

Expect a night where sensory experiences and audiovisual elements are unleashed on the dance floor, reshaping the club environment into a dynamic space of connection, transformation, and sonic explorations.

The event features performances by internationally renowned artists who specialize in blending otherworldly soundscapes with cutting-edge rhythmical structures, creating a sonic laboratory that dissolves the barriers between self and other, reality and imagination.

In this way, club night becomes more than just a party - it evolves into an essential ritual for contemporary urban life. In a world often fragmented by technology and isolation, the event provides a haven for collective expression, where music, light and movement weave new forms of interconnectedness and understanding. Through this shared, ephemeral experience, “Symbiotic Realities” comes alive, demonstrating how nightlife can serve as a powerful counterpoint to the complexities of the digital age by bringing people together in moments of ecstatic unity.
